The TOEFL iBT is a marathon of academic endurance. Unlike other exams that test English in general contexts, the TOEFL is strictly academic. You aren’t just taking an English test; you are simulating a day in the life of a university student.
The defining feature of the TOEFL is its Integrated Tasks. In the real world, you don’t just speak; you listen to a professor, read a textbook, and then speak about it. The TOEFL replicates this:
Integrated Writing: Read a passage, listen to a lecture that usually contradicts it, and write a comparison.
Integrated Speaking: Listen to a campus conversation and summarize the solution to a student’s problem.
The Strategy: You must be a “master note-taker.” If your notes are weak, your score will be too.
TOEFL reading passages are long, dense, and taken from university-level textbooks.
The “Insert a Sentence” Task: This is unique to TOEFL. You must understand the logical flow of a paragraph to know where a new piece of information fits.
Vocabulary in Context: You don’t need to know every word in the dictionary, but you must be able to guess a word’s meaning based on the “clues” in the surrounding sentences.
TOEFL listening tracks can last up to 5 minutes.
The Challenge: You cannot see the questions until the audio is finished.
The Fix: Don’t just write down facts; write down the Professor’s Attitude. Does the professor sound skeptical? Surprised? Encouraging? The TOEFL often asks why a professor said a specific phrase.
In the 2026 format, the speaking section is fast-paced. You have very little preparation time (usually 15–30 seconds).
Campus Situations: You need to sound like a student. Use natural transitions like “From the student’s perspective…” or “The professor argues that…”
The Clock is your Enemy: You only have 45 to 60 seconds to speak. If you spend too much time on the introduction, you will miss the conclusion—and your score will suffer.
